How contrave works
Contrave is a prescription weight-loss medicine that may help some adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m2 or greater (obese), or adults with a BMI of 27 kg/m2 or greater (overweight) with at least one weight-related medical problem such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes, lose weight and keep the weight off.
How It Works: Contrave targets the hunger and reward centers in the brain:
- Reduces cravings and emotional eating
- Helps control appetite and impulsive snacking
- May also improve energy and mood in some individuals
Medication Class:
- Naltrexone: opioid antagonist
- Bupropion: dopamine/norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (also used for depression/smoking cessation)
Expected Results:
- Average 5–10% weight loss over 12 months
- Most weight loss occurs in the first 12–16 weeks
- Works best combined with lifestyle changes (diet, physical activity, behavior therapy)
Common Side Effects:
- Nausea (most common)
- Constipation
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Insomnia
- Dry mouth
- Increased blood pressure or heart rate (monitor regularly)
Contraindications:
Do NOT USE if you have:
- Seizure disorder
- Uncontrolled hypertension
- History of anorexia or bulimia
- Chronic opioid use or recent opioid withdrawal
- Use of MAOIs in the past 14 days
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
Caution in patients with:
- Liver or kidney impairment
- Psychiatric history (bipolar, suicidal ideation)
